Ok, don't deny it, you love her as much as I do. I grew up with clothes with her on it. Seriously, I was obsessesed. I absolutely loved her accent. She was gorgeous and was just a such a sweet old fashioned girl! But I recently realised: who is she??
Despite me knowing her from my youth, she's actually much older. She was first developped in the 1930's! I've been youtubing clips of her whilst writing this post and it is just so much fun. I was watchin 'Minnie the Moocher' and realised how at odd it was with the era it was in. Betty runs away from her parents with her dog. I think it was the first cartoon of its kind that showed how 'modern' teenagers clashed with their old fashioned parents. She was portrayed as very innocent and as a virgin, despite all the subtle sexual innuendo in the cartoons, which were aimed at adults. This is clearly seen in 'Boop-Oop-A-Doop', where she get sexually harrassed by her boss and is threatened that she might loose her job if she doesn't 'comply' to his wishes. It is actually a very interesting episode to watch.
What I didn't know about her was that by the mid 1930's, she becomes more conservative and wears a slightly longer dress, which is still gorgeous.
But despite all the shows, Betty Boop became one of the most well known brands ever. She is everywhere: one mugs, clothes, key rings , pens and the list goes on.
What did you guys think of Betty Boop growing up?
P.S. I just got my exam results for my final year of uni, and I am officially a graduate. I know have to learn what life in the real world is like...so far, its not that bad...but I am officially scared about my future!
