A Pakistani Engagement

So, this will be the last of my holiday posts, and I thought I'd end it with what I wore to my cousin's engagement, which is by far one of my favourite all time outfits. Pakistani engagements are usually almost as big as weddings themselves, so it was the perfect excuse to dress up (especially since I was just recovering from food poisoning).

I bought the dress from London, but it was pretty unwearable, as it had no back, or proper sleeves, so it wouldn't stay up at all. I took it to Pakistan in the hopes of doing something to it and making it more wearable. My aunt did an amazing job adding a bit of material to the back, so that I could wear it more.

I didn't know about the engagement before I came so I had a tailor quickly whip up these skinny trousers from a black satin material that I bought, and voila: perfect outfit (it would have been very inappropriate to wear the dress without the trousers in Pakistan).

That's me with the bride-to-be. Because weddings are still mainly set up by families, traditionally, the boys side buys the outfit for the girl, with matching jewellery, shoes and a bag.

I did my signature straight at top, curly at bottom hairstyle that I do a lot. All my relatives really loved it and there was actually a queue of cousins and aunts wanting me to re-create the look on them (which I wasn't 100% happy with), and then I got annoyed when one aunt said I was doing it wrong. Don't judge me for this next bit though: I did their hair, but failed to mention the immense about of product that I'd added to mine. So while their hair straightened within a few hours, mine lasted the whole night. And then when asked why mine had lasted, I just shrugged my shoulders, with a 'I don't know', lol. Please don't hate me!

And this is a picture taken by the professional photographer that was on hand. I see some serious airbrushing going on.

I was actually really surprised at how much some people could eat. I mean people had plates PILED with chicken and rice and who knows what else. And, no lie, people where actually standing there, eating, by the buffet table, not letting other people through, just waiting for more food to come so they could grab it. It was madness.

This sounds like quite the event! I thought my own engagement was a little crazy, but it was definitely nothing like what you've described :) Your dress is gorgeous, your aunt did an amazing job turning it into something that you can wear in a practical way. And your hair is fabulous, too- I honestly can't blame you for not wanting everyone to have the same hairstyle as you; it like if you showed someone the dress you were going to wear to a party and they bought the same one! No judgement from me at all :D

You look really lovely. That's lovely that your relatives were so impressed by your hair they wanted you to do the same for them. I can imagine how tiring that must have been eventually though. The last photo of you is lovely but yes, I totally spotted the airbrushing!

That dress is so pretty and looks spectacular on you!! :) And your cousin is so lovely as well. I always envy engagements and weddings over in Pakistan/India. Everything is just so much more glamorous over there. The outfits are gorgeous, the colors are stunning, and the dancing and the food and...sigh. Everything. I'm seriously considering getting married in India some day. :)

Sherin...I loved the way you altered the dress and I would definitely wear pants with that dress, to amp up the unique quotient. The fact the pants are satin adds to the allure. I love altering clothes too, it makes them unique. You look absolutely lovely!

Wow this seems very similar to my friend's engagement party, she's from Bangladesh. She was dressed up with all ornate jewels and a similar head piece. The family introduced her to her soon-to-be husband but she's 24 so I don't know why she's rushing to get married but *sigh* haha She told me to wear what I want but it was cold so I wore leggings under my dress and thankfully! I would have had the only exposed legs at the place.

You look really beautiful. I love your hair and dress. I often find I have to make alterations to clothes to make them wearable. Lucky you to have an aunt to help.

You look very elegant. Sorry that the dress was hard to wear! I didn't even notice that there was a black thing under it! Good job!

You look really cute. Sometimes I can eat a lot. Like a whole lot. Like a ridiculous amount!

And as for short dresses I always just add material at the end. Sometimes lace. It always turns out decent.
