Q&A With Lydia Bright

The night before I flew into Dubai, I had a lovely evening courtesy of Littlewoods. Alongside several other bloggers, I was invited to sit down and have a chat with Lydia Bright (from The Only Way Is Essex) for her new collection for Littlewoods.

She seemed like such a nice person and I loved how passionate she was about her collection and about fashion in general. All too many times, there are celebrities who don't really know what they're talking about when they design their own lines, but Bright seemed to really know what she was on about and was involved in the whole designing process, from start to finish.

It was a perfect event - it was a relaxed atmosphere throughout, as we all sat around and informally asked some questions, ate some food and had a general laugh as we discussed everything from her family to her love of fashion.

Here's some of the questions we asked:

What are your main influences?

I love past style icons, especially those of the 50's, so Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe. In the 50's, a woman was a woman and everything was a lot more glamorous, especially with all the furs and red lipstick.

What are your favourite trends for Spring/Summer 2013?

I love pastels and look forward to having them as a big trend for the upcoming season. I think powder blues and blush pinks are so girly and pretty.

How involved were you in the collection designing and how did you manage to stay motivated?

I think if you're passionate about something, it's very easy to stay motivated. Fashion has always played such a huge role in my life - my family has always been involved in fashion so it's always been a part of my life. I absolutely love fashion and have always been told that if I'm going to do something, I should do it properly.
I made sure I was heavily involved through the whole process. If not, it wouldn't have reflected my true style. A lot of celebrities just put their names to a line, but I wanted this to really reflect me and who I am.

Do you have any fashion faux pas?

I once went to a charity ball in the summer, and decided to wear a sheer skirt and sheer top, with just a slip underneath. I thought it was fine, but with all the flashes of the camera's, it looked like I was wearing nothing!

Do you have a favourite piece in the collection?

I love the burgundy dress - it's very flattering and the off the shoulder sleeves have a lovely 50's feel to it. It's such a timeless and elegant piece. This is a small collection, just to see what works well, and what people like the most. The next collection will hopefully be bigger with more separates, and in the future, I'd love to do more shoes and accessories.
I feel like no matter what, I would have opened my boutique (Bella Sorella), but if I wasn't on TOWIE, I don't know if I'd have been able to do the collection. I already had all the publicity and being on TOWIE gave me amazing opportunities. We have a worldwide viewership, so we get sales from all around the world too.

Who is the girl for your collection?

I don't want it to stick to one style. The designs have a 50's shape to them, but the aim is for them to fit all shapes, sizes and ages - I want the collection to appeal to as many people as possible.

What is your personal style?

I love the high street, especially when it comes to clothes. I splurge a bit with designer handbags and shoes, but when it comes to clothes, there are so many amazing pieces on the high street. With fast fashion, there is always such a quick turnover in stores, so it's unlikely that someone will be wearing the same pieces as you when you're out at a party or event. I don't have a stylist, so everything I wear, I pick myself. I love shopping and no one can know your style like yourself.

What's next for you?

I've left TOWIE, so that I have more time to focus on fashion, my brand and actual designing. I'd like to take more chances, but I'd love to do more TV as well, which would be great for my fashion career.

I saw a couple of snaps from this evening on Instagram and was so envious - the event looks so casual and comfortable and Lydia really seemed to be engaged and excited about the project {if you can tell all of that from a photo...!} I can't wait to check out her collection :)
